WAX MANNEQUIN + BA JOHNSTON + THE GOOD IDEAS + VINCAT

A musical extravaganza!

WAX MANNEQUIN was born in the smoke and industry of Hamilton, Ontario; a damaged, underdog town; a perfect breeding ground for strange, variant things. Incorporating folk, scrappy prog-metal and a tireless creative ethic, Wax infused his local influences with road-broken experience to forge something new. Band-backed, or solo (accompanied by heavy devices and an angry electric guitar) Wax Mannequin has been touring incessantly within Canada (and Australia) over the past five years. Oblivious to the trend and trap of the big cities and the cultural propaganda machines, Wax Mannequin now finds himself a forerunner in a strange new movement: roaming recluses and attention-seekers -- solo-performers, equipped with laptops, assorted instruments and decaying minivans, making new sounds, informed by hard travel and rough living. Wax's thought-provoking live performances and acclaimed recordings have garnered the fervent support of the creative underclass in his home country as well as a burgeoning international reputation.

"I could start off with a catch-all like 'shockingly good songwriter' or 'eclectic artist,' and while that would partly describe Hamilton's Wax Mannequin, it would do the man a great disservice to leave it at that." - NOW MAGAZINE - Disc of the Week, June 28 - July 4 2007

BA JOHNSTON has spent the last 4 years either living at his moms or touring canada on the greyhound bus. he's played in laundromats, laundry rooms, stag and does, church halls, legions, bars, bookstores, vegan cafes and other hell holes across this country with bands like immaculate machine, cuff the duke and mayor mcca. his music is nerd rock at its highest point, dork lullabys and loser anthems. 5 albums later he is still eating mr.noodles in his moms basement and hoping to soon escape. he is the definition of FRYCOOL.

Recent United Steelworkers of Montreal Press Quotes:

"The highlight tonight for me was The United Steel Workers Of Montreal who I caught at the Silver Dollar. Great stage presence, loved the duo vocals of their female lead Felicity and their male lead Gern (who has almost a Tom Waits-esq style). I also loved the banjo and of course the songs are great. Definitely a band to see live!" - James Booth, Radio 3 CBC, Mar 14, 2007

“The hoot-and-holler meter went highest when the United Steel Workers of Montreal thundered through a set of urban hillbilly -- or "citygrass" -- music…. drumless fire on the mountain romping, with the sloppy fierceness of a Tom Waits - Shane MacGowan knife fight.” - BRAD WHEELER, GLOBE & MAIL

“With their classy hoedown duds, vintage microphone and rotating lineup, bluegrass/folk pros the United Steel Workers of Montreal were a hit at the Silver Dollar. Leader/founder Gern F's craggy voice and hunched-into-the-mic posture fleshed out their O Brother, Where Art Thou aesthetic, and Felicity Hamer showed off her vocal dexterity. ” – NOW MAZAZINE

Having laid their claim to a plot of musicdom just east of Alt-Country, THE UNITED STEEL WORKERS OF MONTREAL forged themselves a unique sound that has been described as "rousing, old style cowboy punk with an urban edge". Undeniable musical virtuosity as well as the band's forceful presence and always endearing stage banter have helped propel The USWM to become one of Montreal's top live acts. The Steel Workers' debut album, Broken Trucks and Bottles, was recorded at the UHW Studio in Montreal (founded by band member Gern f). The album mixes original songs written by with a few covers of independent bands that have inspired USWM along the way.

Showing how raucous and affecting this blues-y, urban, alt-country band can be, the songs on their second album 'Kerosene & Coal' start from the grit of Montreal’s south-west neighbourhoods before tearing down truck routes to move past highway pit stops for gas-station melodramas and back-road drag races, with a bank robbery thrown in for good measure. Well stocked with twelve 80-proof tracks that explore true love (both requited and the other kind), the fringes of the workaday life, desperation, redemption, and the camaraderie of a neighbourhood bar at last call, Kerosene & Coal handily captures the infectious draw of The United Steel Workers of Montreal.
